Septic Maintenance

Septic Maintenance

The first line of defense in maintaining your septic system is regular pumping. J.L. Martin and Sons recommends that you have your system pumped every 3-4 years. When pumping isn’t enough, we offer a Preventative Maintenance Program to help support and keep your septic system operating at its peak performance.

J.L. Martin and Sons Septic is proud to be one of the few septic professionals in the York County region that offers a Preventative Maintenance Program to our customers. We provide solutions for root infiltration, bacteria maintenance, and re-establishing soil absorption in drainfields.

Root Infiltration: If there are trees or shrubs near or around your septic system, there is a good chance that the roots are making their way to your system, if they are not already there. Vegetation loves effluent water! You can help keep them at bay and prevent them from infiltrating your system with our Preventative Root Retardant program. Keeping roots out of your system will assist in preventing clogs, back-ups, and damage to your tank walls and delivery lines.

Bacteria Maintenance: Your septic system contains a collection of living organisms that digest and treat human waste. Using toxins such as chemical drain cleaners (it is best to use boiling water or a drain snake), solvents, bleach, and other toxic cleaners can kill these organisms and leave your tank full of sludge and solids. The toxins and excess sludge can breakdown the concrete walls and limit the life of your septic tank/system. Having good bacteria added will allow the bacteria to function as it should and will help prevent back-ups from an overload of solids in the tank, potentially reduce heavy fees when you have a pump out, and prevent premature deterioration of the tank and delivery lines.

Re-Establishing Soil Absorption in a Drainfield: If a septic system absorption area is a drainfield and you notice septage at the surface or ponding around your system, it could be a sign that your drainfield is over saturated and can no longer handle the load. Moving a drainfield or installing a sandmound can be a very costly repair. We offer a drainfield additive as an easier and cheaper way to attempt to re-establish absorption in your existing drainfield and potentially extend the life of the drainfield.
